Network Devices Flashcards
What is a modem?
A modem is a device that allows computers to transmit data over telephone lines or cable lines. Modems are typically used to connect to the internet or other remote networks.
What is a switch?
A switch is a networking device that connects multiple devices on a local area network (LAN). Switches are used to direct data traffic between devices on the network and can improve network performance by reducing network congestion.
What is a hub?
A hub is another type of networking device that connects multiple devices on a LAN. However, unlike switches, hubs simply broadcast all data to all devices on the network, which can lead to network congestion.
What is a router?
A router is a networking device that connects multiple networks together. Routers can direct traffic between networks, as well as provide security features such as firewalls and VPNs.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a networking device that connects two LANs together. Bridges can improve network performance by reducing the amount of network traffic that needs to be transmitted across the LANs.
What is a NIC?
A NIC (network interface card) is a hardware component that allows a computer to connect to a network. NICs come in different forms, such as Ethernet cards or wireless cards, and can be built into a computer’s motherboard or added as an expansion card.
What is a workstation?
A workstation is *a type of computer that is designed for high-performance tasks, such as graphic design or scientific research. *Workstations typically have more powerful hardware than standard desktop computers and are optimized for running specialised software.
