Network Devices Flashcards
1
Q
Hubs
A
- Is a multiport physical repeater that is used primarily to connect workstations
- Incoming frames are repeated on all ports
-Except the port it came out on - Collision Domain - is a network segment where collisions can occur, a collision is when two devices try to send data at the same time.
- When this happens both devices wait a specified amount of time to re-transmit.
When connected to a hub devices rely on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD)
2
Q
Bridges
A
- Use MAC addresses of data recipients to deliver frames.
- Maintain a forwarding database with the host of the senders MAC address, if its not already there.
3
Q
Switches
A
- Can be used to provide network connectivity to network devices.
- Operate at Layer 2 or Layer 3
- Layer 2 switches function similar to bridges,
- Layer 3 switches add routing functionality
- Forward packets to the correct ports, results in fewer collisions.
- Can break a large network into smaller networks.
- Layer 2 switches store MAC addresses in their Content Address Memory (CAM) table
- The CAM table associates the proper MAC address with the physical port
4
Q
Routers
A
- Is used to forward packets between computer networks
- Routers create separate broadcast domains
- Makes decisions based on logical addresses, such as IP address.
- Routers store IP addresses in a routing table
- Routing table is stored in table called Ternary CAM (TCAM)
- TCAM table is used to provide wire speed
5
Q
Endpoints
A
- Individual computing devices that access the services.
- Like a PC.
6
Q
WAP
A
- Wireless Access Point
- Enables wireless clients to connect to a wireless network.
