Network Components Flashcards
S3 M2
a wireless connection point for users to directly connect to a wired network using wireless-enabled devices
access point
connects separate networks that use the same protocol, even if those networks have different topologies or transmission speeds
bridge
connect multiple networks that use different protocols, translating one protocol to another so that the 2 networks can interact (usually application layer)
gateway
connection points that link multiple systems & devices using the same protocol within a single network; receive data packets & forward them to all other devices
hubs
modulates between digital info & an analog signal to support networks (connect computer to internet)
modems
A form of gateway that does not translate protocols but acts as a mediator that performs functions on behalf of another network using the same protocol instead of just connecting the networks
proxy
controls data flow on a network using the same protocol by receiving incoming data packets & forwarding those to the correct destination based on IP addresses
routers
support computers & networks by performing different core functions like running with application servers, storing files with a file server, or storing data using a database server
server
devices like amplifiers, concentrators, & repeaters that receive signals & then modify them by increasing the signal strength, combining multiple signals, or simply regenerating the signal
signal modifiers
