Network Cabling Flashcards
What are the three primary types of network cable?
coaxial, twisted pair, and fiber
What twisted pair cable has a transmission rate of up to 100 Mbps over a max distance of 100 meters?
Cat 5
What twisted pair cable has a transmission rate of up to 1Gbps over a max distance of 100 meters due to the separation of the 4 sets of twisted pairs from one another and an increased number of twisted in the cable pairs.
Cat 5e
What twisted pair cable has a transmission rate of up to 10Gbps over a max distance of 55 meters?
Cat 6
What twisted pair cable has a transmission rate of up to 10Gbps but have an increased distance capability of up to 100 meters?
Cat 6e
What cable is made of a single copper-cored cable contained in an inner insulation layer? Used for cable and satellite devices.
Coaxial Cable
What cable is made of a pairs of individual copper wires twisted into pairs that are twisted together? The cable is contained within an insulated jacket.
Twisted Copper Pair
What are the two types of twisted copper pairs?
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)/Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
What is the difference between unshielded twisted pair and shielded twisted pair?
STP cabling has each copper pair in a layer of braided foil sheathing before being twisted with the other pairs in the cable to reduce electrical interference.
In regard to cabling, what is “direct burial”?
The practice of burying cabling underground.
When using direct burial to bury cabling underground, what type of cables should be used?
STP cabling with an extra waterproof sheathing.
What is plenum?
A Teflon-type covering used to cover all types of network cables. Used in cables that may be exposed to extreme heat or have the possibility of releasing gasses into a ventilation system, such as ceilings.
What cable used light pulses to transfer data?
Fiber optic cabling.
What are the benefits of fiber optic cabling?
Fiber is immune to both electrical interference and wiretapping. Can transmit high speeds over several miles.
What are the two basic types of fiber?
single-mode/multimode
What type of fiber carries only one light path, typically sourced by a laser?
single-mode fiber
What type of fiber carries multiple light paths and is sourced by an LED?
multimode fiber
What is the T568A standard cable pair colors?
white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown, and brown.
What is the T568B standard cable pair colors?
white/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, and brown.
