Network Basics Flashcards
What is a Hub?
A Hub is a node/device that connects network devices together.
that broadcasts/repeats data to every computer connected to it
What is a Switch?
Switch is also a device that connects devices together on a network however can assign data to designated ports
What is the difference between Hub and Switch?
A hub just relays data whilst switch sends it to where It needs to go
What is a router?
A router connected two different networks together and forwards based on IP address
compared to a switch which only connects devices on the same network
What is the client server model?
The client server model is how data moves around the network, which uses a dedicated server to provide access
communications model in which multiple client programs share the services/permission of a common server program.
What is the P2P model?
P2P model is when peers share resources directly with each other
Pros and Cons of the P2P and Client server model?
C/S MODEL - Pros - central administration so easier management and back ups are easier
scalability as everything is in one place
Cons - Higher Costs, requires specialised OS, requires dedicated resources
P2P - opposite and need to do multiple things in multiple places
What is BUS topology?
A network layout wehere all nodes are connected along a linear/backbone known as a bus
What is Ring Topology?
Each device is connected to two other devices so it forms a ring however data only travels in one direction
What is Star Topology?
A network where each nodes is connected to a central switch
Name the 6 Different type of Topologies and explain what they do?
What is the Hub and Spoke Topology?
Similar to Star Topology but with WAN links instead of LAN and is used for connecting multiple sites together
