Network Architecture Flashcards
What are the two factors that make up network architecture?
Protocols and Layers
Through what does each layer communicate with the next one?
Service Access Point
Do protocols talk between layers?
No
What are the different layers in the network?
Physical, Data-Link, Network, Transport, Application
Is the architecture strict or non-strict with only 5 different layers?
Non-Strict
What are the two types of physical link?
Guided and Unguided
What are some examples of physical media?
Twisted Pair, Coaxial cable, Optic cable, Radio Links
What is the network edge?
It sits just outside the network core and allows devices and LANs to connect to the internet
What is the network edge?
It sits just outside the network core and allows devices and LANs to connect to the internet
What does the term ‘End Systems’ mean?
A device that is trying to use the network
What is the network core?
A central conduit designed to transfer network traffic at high speeds.
What comes from a circuit-switched networks?
FDM and TDM
What comes from Packet-Switched Networks?
Networks with VCs and Datagram Networks
How does FDM work?
When multiple data signals are combined for simultaneous transmission via a shared communication medium.
How does FDM share the medium?
The total bandwidth medium is divided into non-overlapping frequency sub-bands.
