Network and topologies Flashcards
What is bandwidth?
Amount of data that can be transmitted over a given amount of time
What is the internet?
A collection of networks than span the globe
What is Hosting?
A service where you can allow people to put a website on the Internet
What is a web server?
A computer designed to host a website
What is a Web Client?
Device attempting to access web page
What does DNS stand for?
Domain Name Services
What is some advantages of Wireless Transmission Media?
- Easy to setup and add
new devices - No building work needed
- No cables around as trip
hazard
What is Fibre Optic and what are its disadvantages and advantages?
- Ultra Fast
- Works over long distance
- Expensive
- Needs building work
What is a Network Topology?
The arrangement of how you connect the computers together
What are the two types of Network Topologies and what are their uses?
Star - All devices connect to central server or
switch
Mesh - All devices connected to other. You also get
partial mesh when most of connected.
What does LAN stand for and what does it do?
LAN—Local area Network
* Located in one geographical location
* You own all the hardware involved
What is WAN and what does it do?
WAN—Wide Area Network
* Network covering more than one location
* Uses hardware owned by someone else
What is a Network Layer?
Breaks networking down into small task that
work with each other. E.g. Tour browser doesn’t care if you are
wireless or wired.
Advantages of Network Layer?
- Reduce difficult of creating the program as it is broken into small tasks.
- Products from different vendors can work together.
What is a protocol?
A set of rules that govern how devices communicate over a network
What is a Standards?
Manufacturers agree to
make things work with each other
What are some protocols? What are they?
-TCP/IP - Enables communication over the internet
-HTTP - Governs communication between a webserver and a
client. Used to send web pages.
-HTTPS - Same as HTTP but it adds a layer of security/
authentication.
-FTP - Allows the transfer of files between computers.
-POP - Govern retrieving emails from email servers. POP
actually downloads the emails to the computer.
-IMAP - Email protocol that is used to retrieve emails from
mail servers.
-SMTP - Protocol used to send email from a web browser or
client.
Advantage of STAR Topology
If one cable or
connection is lost
only that computer
is affected.
Advantage of MESH topology
Breaks in connection
are not a problem as you can
route your information
through another way.
Disadvantage of STAR Topology
If server/switch
breaks then the
whole network is
Disadvantage of MESH Topology
Expensive as lots of
cable and difficult to
manage.
What is Interference?
Walls and radio signals can interfere with wireless signal strength slowing down the connection.
What is Network Latency?
A measure of how long it takes for a signal to reach its
destination.
