Network Flashcards
What are the 2 types of network?
Peer-to-peer and server based.
Give 3 advantages of peer-to-peer networks.
Any 3 from…
- They are cheap.
- There are not dedicated servers; instead workstations are linked to each other.
- For home networks or small companies.
- Peer-to-peer networks are often built into modern operating systems.
What is the Microsoft term for peer-to-peer networks?
Workgroup.
Give 3 disadvantages of peer-to-peer networks.
Any 3 from…
- They lack central configuration – day-to-day administration cannot be made in just one place.
- They only work with small groups, generally less than 10 computers.
- Security has to be configured on each individual computer.
- User information and files are stored in lots of different places
Give 3 advantages of server based networks.
Any 3 from…
- Can manage with large loads of systems.
- Files are stored in one place so are more easily accessible.
- Easier to administrate when there are more than 5 or so computers.
- Data is always backed up so if data loss occurs then it can be fixed.
Give the main disadvantage of server based networks.
They are expensive.
What is a network component?
A device used to make a network function. Many pieces of hardware have more than 1 type of component built in.
What does a network adapter do?
It works to adapt a computer message to a format used by the network.
What is a modem and what is its main job?
Modem means “Modulator” at the sending end; it modulates a carrier to the data for the baseline signal (e.g. Broadband) to prepare it for transmission.
At the receiving end, the modem modulates the signal back to the original format.
Give 3 other jobs a modem can do.
Any 3 from…
- Compression
- Decryption
- Error correction
- Analogue to digital
- Encryption
Give at least 1 type of modem.
1 from…
- GPRS
- Voiceband
- Cable modem
- ABSL modem
What will your modem communicate with (apart from your computer)?
The corresponding modem at the ISP.
What is a repeater?
A repeater receives data from a transmitter, aplifies it and sends it to a reciever.
What is another name for a repeater?
A regenerator.
What is a repeater’s job?
To extend the distance or enlarge the area of a network.
What is the problem with multiple repeaters?
They may interfere with the network connection.
What is a bridge?
A device used to link 2 separate networks with different protocols (e.g. Ethernet, Wireless LAN (WiFi)). Bridges can also split networks to help manage traffic, and can be managed by a software application.
What is a hub?
A hub is a hardware device that connects multiple computers together in a network.
What does the type of hub suggest?
The amount of computers you can connect to it. E.g. A 5-port hub can connect 5 computers.
What other piece of hardware do you need to “daisy chain” hubs?
Switches.
What is a switch and what is its job?
A switch is a device used to connect multiple network cables together to allow connection, as only 1 data packet can be in a network cable at any one time.
What is a data collision?
When 2 or more computers try to place a data package on the network at exactly the same time. (The network is set to deal with this, however.)
Different networks are compatible if they have the same ______.
Protocol
What is encryption?
Encryption is the conversion of data into a form, called a ciphertext, that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized people.
