Network Flashcards
TCP/IP protocol layering
Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol Layering
Application layer: Identifies what protocol needs to be used
Transport layer: Splits up data into packets, numbers them
Network layer: Adds the source and destination IP addresses, routers user IP addresses to forward the packets
Link layer: Adds the MAC address, identifying the Network Interface Cards
Example of protocols
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: Web pages
File Transfer Protocol: Transmission of files over networks
POP3 (Post Office Protocol): Emails
Internet Protocol / Transmission Control Protocol: Transfers packets through networks
Data Packet Anatomy
Header: IP address, Protocol being used, Order
Payload: The raw data
Trailer: Checksum: Detects any errors
Firewall function
Prevents unauthorized access to a network
Consists of 2 network inface cards, between the user and the Internet. Compares the packets against rules.
Proxies defintion and advantages
Collects and sends data on behalf of the user
+ Privacy
+ Reduce web traffic
Network Interface Card function
Connects a device to a network, has a MAC address
Switch function
Directs flow of data in a network (often star topology)
WAP
Allows a device to connect to a network in mesh networks wirelessly
Router
Connects two or more networks together
