Network Flashcards
What is a network?
two or more computer device, connected together to exchange data
What are some methods that allow network connections to be made?
Using cables/ wires, using radio signals/ wireless - wifi, using telephone lines - using modem, for long distance we can use satellites link.
What are the advantages of network?
- We can easily share data, share resources - printers and internet connections so fewer printers are needed,
- we can also communicate better - using emails, messages,
- we can also access our data from any device/ computer - google drive,
- data can be backed up to separate computer for security,
- all computers can access the internet through one connection
What are the disadvantages of network?
- If a part of the network cable is broken, it can cause the network to break down
- viruses can spread easily
- computer is vulnerable to hackers
- it costs more for extra components
- printing queues can be long
What is a server?
A server are special, powerful computer that provide ‘services’ to client computers on the network.
What type of services do servers provide?
- Providing a central, common file storage area.
- Sharing hardware such as printers
- controlling who can or cannot have access the network
- sharing internet connections
~!EXTRA NOTE!~
Servers are built to be very reliable, meaning that they are more expensive than normal computers.
What are some important notes of LAN?
- LAN is Local Area Network
- They are located in a small building, or a single room
- They are connected using cables or wires, fibre optic cables
- They can be referred as intranet as they are private and can only be accessed by people in the room or in building.
- LAN consist of several computers connected to each other.
List the type of networks
- LAN
- WLAN
- WAN
- Bluetooth/ WPAN
What are the advantages of LAN?
- files can be shared easily
- files and data can be accessed easily from any computer
- LAN can be monitored easily by network manager
- Data sent around LAN very fast because it uses a cable to transfer from one device to another
What are the disadvantages of LAN?
- easier to spread virus
- printer queue can be stressful
- slower internet connection
- increased security risk
- if main server breaks, the whole network connect may no longer function
What are some important notes of WLAN?
- They are similar to LAN but they connect computers together wirelessly instead of using cables/wires.
- They are build by attaching a device called the access point (AP).
- WLAN can be in the form of intranet or internet
- Wireless enabled electronic devices communicate with the AP using a wireless network adapters built in the devices.
What is wifi?
Wifi refers to wireless networking technology that allows computers and other devices to communicate over a signal (w/o cable/wire)
How does wifi work?
- Wifi works with no physical wired connection between sender and receiver by using radio frequency (RF technology)
- It is also the cornerstone of any wireless network that is and access point (AP) or hotspot.
How does wifi work?
(The Job of an Access Point)
- The primary function of an access point is to broadcast a wireless signal that computers can detect and get into.
How does wifi work?
(How to connect a device to an access point/hotspot)
- To connect to an access point/ hotspot and join a wireless network, computers and devices must be equipped with wireless network adapters/ wireless network interface card.
Advantages of WLAN Network
- physically safer than LAN as no cable is required to trip over (decrease safety risk)
- cheaper to set up because you don’t have to buy cable
- easier to add more computer/ other network to other devices.
- devices such as printer and scanner can be shared easily
- computers and devices can be used anywhere in the building.
Disadvantages of WLAN Network
- Wireless can be interfered from other electrical equipment.
- Data transferred will be much slower than LAN
- WLAN can be useless for use in a large building as they have a limited signal range
- Security can be at risk as anyone with wireless enabled devices can try to access the network.
What is WAN?
- WAN is Wide Area Network made up of computers and devices that are connected over a large geographical area.
(Ex : Internet and Network of ATM used in Banks) - WAN is created by connecting lots of LAN and individual computer together.
- Every time you switch on Wi-fi connection or access mobile data, you are connecting your device or computer to WAN.
What is required to connect computer to WAN?
Modem and Router
WAN Advantages
- Computer can be connected wide areas
- Files and data can be shared over a large area
- People can communicate with each other easily over a large area
- E-Commerce website can be set up and accessed by people from all over the world
WAN Disadvantages
- Security can be at risk as anyone with access to internet can potentially access any computer on the network
- It is easier to download viruses
- Data transfer slower than LAN
- Monitoring of WAN can be difficult as many computer is connected to WAN
