Network ++++ Flashcards
How many bits is an FCS and what is it used for
An FCS is 4 bits long and it’s used to correct if all the data is intact using Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)
Describe a frame
A frame is basically a container for a chunk of data moving across the network and it’s 1500 bytes long
What’s the command to show your MAC address for windows
Ipconfig /all
Describe what a hub would do if a frame was received
A hub is essentially a repeater, it would receive the frame then send it to all network devices till the device with the designated MAC address would process the frame. All other devices would drop it.
What is Logical Link Control?
The aspect of the NIC talking to the OS using drivers
What does padding do in an Ethernet Frame?
An Ethernet Frame can not be lower than 64 bytes in size, if it is padding will make it up
What is a preamble?
A preamble is 7 bytes long and they give the NIC time to realize a frame is coming and where it starts.
What does the Type field do?
Helps the receiving computer know if it’s a IPv4 or IPv6
Why is coaxial primary used for modems ISP?
Coaxial provide protection against EMI, low signal lost, and travel long distances. Most common is the F-type connector
Where does (did) a hub send data?
To all the systems connected to the hub
What uniquely identifies every NIC?
Media access control address
What Windows utility do you use to find the MAC address for a system?
ipconfig /all
A MAC address is known as ___ a(n)
address.
Physical
A NIC sends data in discrete chunks called ___
Frames
The MAC address of which of the following begins a frame?
Receiving system

10BASE-T hub?
1024
When used for Ethernet, unshielded twisted pair uses what type of connector?
RJ-45
What was the maximum distance that could separate a 10BASE-T node from is hubs
100 meters
What type of bus did 10BASE-T use?
Star bus

Repeated
What is at the beginning of the Ethernet frame?
Preamble
What is the most common category of UTP used in new cabling installation?

A frame ends with a special bit called the frame check sequence (FCS). What does
the FCS do?
Verifies that the data arrived correctly
Which layer of the OSI model controls the segmentation and reassembly of data?

What two devices together enable you to pick a single cable out of a stack of cables?
Tone generator
Tone probe
Your first day on the job, you get a call from the owner complaining that her network connection is down. A quick check of the central switch verifies that it’s in good working order, as is the boss’s PC. As luck would have it, your supervisor calls at just that time and tells you not to worry; she’ll be by in a jiffy with her TDR to help root out the problem. What is she talking about?
Time-domain reflectometer, her network tester
Which of the following network technologies use UTP cabling in a star topology?
1000BASE-T
What are patch cables used for?
1.) To connect PC’s in outlet boxes
2.) To connect the patch panel to the switch.
