Network Flashcards
What is a network?
A group of two or more devices connected together. Networks are usually used to share resources, exchange files or communicate with other users.
What is a LAN?
Local area network- network that is confined to one building/site.
What is a WAN?
Wide area network- a network that is spread over a wide geographical area.
What is a WLAN?
Wireless local area network
What is a PAN?
Personal area network- small area/confined to one person.
What is a WAP?
Wireless access point- a networking device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network.
What is a NIC?
Network interface card- a computer network component taut connects a computer to a computer network.
What is a router?
Sends and receives data on computer networks.
What is ethernet?
A wired method to connect computers to a network using utp cables.
What is a switch?
Stores MAC addresses of a device on a network and filters data packets to see which devices have asked for them.
What is a star topology?
All nodes are directly connected to a common central computer often referred to as a hub.
What is a bus topology?
All nodes in the network are connected directly to a central cable that runs up and down the network (cable-backbone)
What is the application layer?
Where software operates: Web browsers, email services.
What is the transport layer?
Setting up the communication between two devices. Splitting data into packets and checking packets are correctly sent and delivered.
What is the Internet layer?
Where the hardware and drivers operate. Passes data over the physical network, such as ethernet cables, WiFi signals, NIC etc.
