- originally a long inlet of the sea that threatened large areas of low lying land
- a 30km barrier completed by 1932, creating a fresh water lake

dunes occupy 42,000 hectres

why is there a negative balance of the coastal dune area
A
-currents and waves remove sand and deposit it somewhere else

what are the main protective measures of the coastal dune area
A
- sand and water mixed is pumped from the sea bed, then sprayed on the beaches
- grasses and trees planted to hold sand
- steeper dykes are placed below dunes
- certain areas fenced off to prevent trampling
