Nervous Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the general features of nervous tissue
A
- Maintains homeostasis
- Initiates voluntary movements
- Responsible for perception, behaviour & memory
2
Q
Describe the 3 main functions of nervous tissue
A
- Sensory: transfer of info about detected stimuli to CNS
- Integrative: analyses & stores information
- Motor: stimulates effectors (muscle & glands) via PNS
3
Q
Nervous tissue consists of two different types of cells
A
- Neurons (large nerve cells)
2. Neuroglia (small supportive cells)
4
Q
Neurons are structurally classified.
Name the 4 different types of neurons
A
- Multipolar
- Bipolar
- Unipolar
- Anaxonic
* remember B-U-M-A… what are BUMA!
5
Q
Multipolar Neurons
A
- Several dendrites & one axon
- All motor neurons are multipolar
- Make up most of the neurons in the CNS
6
Q
Bipolar Neurons
A
- Small & rare
- Special sense organs (sight, smell, hearing)
- Contain 2 distinct processes: cell body sits between the axon and dendrite
