Nervous tissue Flashcards
Identify and explain the specific parts of a neurone
Dendrites are extension of the cell body and receive
input from other neurones here.
Cell body - contains the nucleus, the control centre of the cell
Axon - the long thin structure that transmits electrical impulses. It is coated in myelin which insulates the axon, allowing the propagation of impulses via saltatory conduction at the nodes of Ranvier.
Axon terminal - the end of the axon where a synapse is formed to allow communication between 2 neurones.
Identify and draw the 3 main types of neurone
Unipolar, Bipolar and multipolar
What are neuroglia?
The supporting cells of the nervous system
What is the role of astrocytes?
The most common support cell for repair and maintains nerve and plasticity,
What is the role of satellite cells?
Cover the surface of nerve cells in the ganglion and regulate and stabilise the environment around them.
What is the role of microglial cells?
Reside in macrophages and are therefore the main and first form of immunity in the nervous system,
What is the role of ependymal cells?
Line the spinal canal and ventricles and create CSF.
What is the role of oligodendrocytes?
Produce myelin in the CNS
What is the role of schwann cells?
Produce myelin the PNS
