Controls everything, including conscious awareness and psychological functions

Passes messages to and from the brain to the PNS
Is responsible for reflex actions

What is the peripheral nervous system made up of?
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
What is a nervous system?
A specialised network of cells
What are the 2 main functions of the human nervous system?
To collect, process & respond to information in the environment
Coordinates the working of organs and cells in the body
What is the function of the somatic nervous system in the PNS? (2)
Controls muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors
What is the autonomic nervous system made up of?
and what are they to each other
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
(they are antagonistic)
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system in the PNS?
Regulates vital functions such as breathing, stress response & heart rate
What is the role of the PNS?
Transmits messages from the outside world to the CNS, and from the CNS to muscles and glands in the body
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the body’s energy?
Expends it for fight or flight response
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do to the body’s energy?
Maintains and conserves it
