Nervous System: Receptors Flashcards
What is a change the environment referred to as?
Stimulus
What detects a stimulus?
A receptor
What do Mechanoreceptors do?
Detect movement, pressures and tensions (sound)
What do Thermoreceptors do?
Detect temperature changes (in skin, hypothalamus is responsible for thermoregulation)
What do Chemoreceptors do?
Detect chemical stimuli (taste and smell aka olfactory senses)
What do Electroreceptors do?
Detect electrical fields (mainly found in fish, like hammerheads)
What do Photoreceptors do?
Detect light and some other forms of electromagnetic radiation (bees can detect UV light as well as visible)
What is 2-point discrimination?
Receptor density experiments are carried out using toothpicks and seeing how easily one can distinguish between 2 points on different areas of their body
