Nervous System, Pt. 2 Flashcards
Structures located in Forebrain
cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, limbic system, olfactory bulb
structures located in diencephalon
Thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus
structures located in hindbrain
pons, cerebellum, medulla oblengata
structures located in brainstem
pons, midbrain, medulla oblengata
what is a longitudinal fissure
deep groove in brain that separates brain into left and right hemispheres
what is a central sulcus
a superficial groove in brain that separates the frontal and parietal lobes
what is a lateral sulcus
a superficial groove in brain that separates the frontal and parietal lobe superiorly from the temporal lobe inferiorly
what are gyrus
bumps on the surface of the brain that increase surface area, and help with certain functions
structures involved in circulating cerebrospinal fluid
CSF circulates in the subarachnoid space around the brain, spinal cord and in the ventricles in the brain.
how is CSF produced
CSF is secreted by the choroid plexus
what does CSF do
CSF protects, nourishes, and removes waste, CSF also acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the brain against the skull to prevent damage.
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do
rest and digest, relaxes body after stress, decreases respiration and heart rate.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do
fight or flight response, stress response, increase heart rate and release adrenaline
where do you find the sympathetic nerves
lumbar regions of the spine, and the splanchnic nerves
Where do you find the parasympathetic nerves
oculmulater nerve, facial nerve
