Q

Right (non-dominant) hemisphere specialties and injury consequences

A

-non-verbal language → injury results in loss of non verbal language
-emotional expression → injury results in loss of emotion
-spatial skills (3D) → injury results in spatial disorientation
-conceptual understanding → injury results in inability to recognise familiar objects
-artistic and musical skills → injury results in loss of musical appreciation

Q

SMAGLA and visual cortex

A

-SMAGLA: supramarginal and angular gyri language area (they are responsible for reading and writing)
-primary visual cortex: located at back of brain in occipital lobe, organises data in visual field
-secondary visual cortex: located more inner, next to primary visual cortex, makes things up for consistency in visual field
-parietoccipital sulcus: separates occipital lobe and parietal lobe
-preoccipital notch
-calcarine sulcus: runs down middle of occipital lobe horizontally marking the region of the primary visual cortex, with central vision being at the posterior and peripheral vision being at the anterior of the primary visual cortex, calcarine sulcus receives information from both sides of the optic chiasm
