Nervous System- L4 Flashcards
Central nervous system
composed of the brain and spinal cord
processes sensory information to activate appropriate actions
spinal cord
sends information from sensory neurons from the body to the brain
relays motor commands back to muscles and organs via motor neurons from the brain
peripheral nervous system
connected to the spinal cord and consists of all the nerves outside the central nervous system
carries sensory information from the body to the central nervous system , and motor information from the central nervous system to the body
somatic nervous system
transmits sensory information to the CNS and carries out its motor commands
involved in voluntary muscle movements
autonomic nervous system
responsible for automatic responses
carries information to internal bodily structures (heart, lungs, flands) that carry out basic life functions
sympathetic nervous system
readies the bidy for the fight or flight response when its exposed to threats
parasympathetic nervous system
supports more routine activities that maintain the body’s store of energy
when a threat has passed the parasympathetic nervous system resumes control from the sympathetic nervous system
body in parasympathetic nervous system
-heart rate lowers
- blood pressure lowers
- pupils constrict
- stop sweating
- digestion increases
- bladder control again
body in sympathetic nervous system
- dilation of pupils to allow more light in for better vision
- acceleration of heartbeat which increases oxygen flow into muscles
-secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline which increases energy production
-slows digestion
enteric nervous system
controls the digestive system and is directly connected to the CNS
consists of nerve cells (neurons) lining the gastrointestinal tract
