nervous system and synaptic transmission Flashcards
Divisions of the nervous system
-the central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord
-somatic nervous system controls voluntary movements
The somatic nervous system…
Comprises of two sub systems
Which response results from the action of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system?
Increased heart rate
Sensory neurons carry information…
Towards the brain
Describe two or more functions of the peripheral nervous system?
-sensory function - receives information from body + sends to CNS
-motor function - carries commands from the CNS to muscles and glands
describe the structure and function of a neuron?
-sensory neuron - detect information from your senses (cell body,dendrites,axon-pass on information onto the CNS)
-relay neuron- only found in the CNS and visual system (axon is much shorter allowing sensory + motor neurons to communicate with eachother)
-motor neuron - allow muscle contractions (axon is very long, up to 1 metre)
one difference between the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system?
-autonomic- involuntary movements
-somatic-voluntary movements
Outline role of the sympathetic nervous system
-essential for our ability to respond quickly to potential threats
-fight or flight
What is the process of synaptic transmission?
Why can information only travel in one direction at the synapse?
-receptors are only found on the post synaptic neuron
-diffusion travel from high to low concentration
