Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Central Nervous System
A
- Cerebral hemispheres
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
- Spinal cord
2
Q
Peripheral Nervous System
A
- Nerves issued from the brainstem and spinal cord (cranial and spinal respectively)
- Sensory nerve cells (ganglia)
3
Q
Gray Matter
A
-Consists of clusters of neuron cell bodies (soma, somata)
4
Q
White Matter
A
- Myelinated axons which connect different areas of gray matter
- Connections referred to as fiber tracts, pathways, fasciculi (fasciculus)
5
Q
Afferent (sensory) Pathways
A
- an axon coursing toward and innervating a given structure (info is arriving)
6
Q
Efferent (motor) Pathways
A
- an axon originating in and coursing away from a given structure
7
Q
Cortex
A
outer most layer of the brain
hold the Gyri (gyrus),Sulci (sulcus), Fissure
8
Q
Superior Longitudinal Fissure (aka Longitudinal Cerebral Fissure)
A
Separates the right and left hemisphere
9
Q
Central Suculus
A
Separates the pre central gyrus from the post central gyrus
10
Q
Sylvian (lateral) Fissure
A
Separates temporal lobe the rest of the cerebrum superior from it
11
Q
Frontal lobe
A
- has the broacas area - important speech and language (implicated in speech and language)
- motor planning area
- memory, motivation and personality
12
Q
Parietal lobe
A
- receives info from the body- info about touch, temperature and pain
- visual spacious processing
- perception of location, movement and action of various parts of body
13
Q
Temporal
A
- Auditory processing of sounds
- important for processing of shapes, colors, and numbers
14
Q
Occipital
A
Primary visual info from the eyes
15
Q
Thalamus
A
- sensory pathways run through thalamus
Relay center of brain - relays sensory info from lower parts of brain - help integrate and regulate info from the brain
