Nervous System Flashcards
Controls the rapid activities of the body such as muscular contraction, secretions of some endocrine glands, heart rate, respiration rate, gastrointestinal motility, and rapid reflex action.
Composed of the: BRAIN, SPINAL CORD, and NERVES
Nervous System
Specialize in impulse conduction or the relay messages from effector organs to the nervous system and vice versa
Nerve cells or Neurons
Transmits nerve impulses from effector organs to the spinal cord or brain
Afferent (sensory) neuron
Transmits nerve impulses from the spinal cord or brain to the effector organs
Efferent (motor) neuron
Conducts impulses from an afferent neuron within the Central Nervous System (CNS)
Interneuron
Contains the majority of the nervous system and consist of the bain and the spinal cord
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Resides or extendw outside the limbs and organs. Its is not protected by bone, leaving it exposed to toxins and mechanical injuries. Divide into:
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Innervates striated or skeletal muscles, brings about quick adjustments to changes in environment
Somatic Nervous System
Innervates glands and visceral musculature
-Two major division of autonomic:
A. Sympathetic Nervous System
B. Parasympathetic
Autonomic
Aids in the control of the most of the body’s internal organs, works to mobilize the body’s resources for action under stress
Sympathetic Nervous System
Works to promote maintenancr of the body at rest
Parasympathetic
