Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
The brain and the spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Connects brain & spinal cord to rest of the body. Made up of autonomic and somatic
Sympathetic Nervous System
Flight or fight response.
Vigorous activity
Releases norepinephrine
Autonomic Nervous System
Controls heart & intestines. Made of sympathetic and parasympathetic
Somatic Nervous System
Sense organs, connections from CNS to muscles and vice versa
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Vegetative state/ non emergency. Low heart rate and high digestive activity. Releases serotonin
Hindbrain
Includes: pons, medulla, and cerebellum
Affects support, balance, and coordination
Neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin synthesized in hindbrain.
Thalamus
Relay station of sensory info (1st stop) & decides what becomes conscious and what does not go to the cortex.
Input
Hypothalamus
Involved in motivated behaviors
4 Fs: food, fornicating, fight, & flight & sleep
Basal ganglia
Learning of simple automatic sequences/ habits
Output
Can overpower frontal lobe
Involved in addiction
Cortical areas
Occipital, parietal, temporal, frontal
Occipital lobe
Visual perception
Occipital pathways
What pathway (ventral) Where pathway (dorsal)
What/ Ventral pathway
From occipital to temporal lobe. “What is it?” Uses memory
Where / Dorsal pathway
From occipital to parietal lobe
Where is it?
Spatial representation
