Nervous system Flashcards
what does the nervous system allow you to do?
react to surroundings and coordinate
Your nervous system carries electrical signals called what?
impulses
How fast do the electrical signals travel and why do they travel this fast?
1-120m per second
to allow u to react quickly
what are changes in the body known as ?
stimuli or stimulus
stimulus are detected by cells called ?
receptors
where would u find receptors that respond to pressure?
Skin
How does your nervous system work?
sensory receptor detects stimuli
the info is passed along by impulses
the impulses travel along the sensory neurones
the sensory neurones travel impulses along to the CNS
the cell after the CNS that travels the impulses is called the motor neurone
The motor neurones carry the impulses to the effector organ to make them respond.
effector organs are usually what?
muscles or glands
what are automatic responses known as ?
reflex arcs
why are reflexes very important
help avoid danger or harm
reflex actions involve what neurones?
sensory neurones
motor neurones
relay neurones
how does a reflex work?
an electrical impulse travels from the sensory receptor along the sensory neurone to the CNS
then it passes along a relay neurone and straight back along the motor neurone
the impulse arrives at the effector organ
how do synapses work?
there are junctions/gaps between nerves called synapses
the impulses travelling along the neurone have to cross these synapses
when an impulse arrives at a junction between two neurones chemicals are released into the gap which cross the synapse.
the chemicals attach to the surface of the next neurone.
so a new impulse is set up.
