Nervous system Flashcards
What is the PNS?
The peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS composed of?
The Brain and the Spinal cord
What are the two components of the PNS?
Somatic system and the autonomic system
What does the somatic system do?
- send sensory info to the brain and spinal cord. These include:
- skin, muscle, bones and joints (touch, pressure, temp and pain)
- have motor fibres that object to the skeletal muscles
What are the main sources of info for the somatic system?
Vision
Audition
Olfaction
Gustration
What is the CNS
Central nervous system
What does the autonomic system do?
Regulates bodily functions. Including:
- breathing
- heart rate
- blood pressure
- kidney function
- digestion
What are the two systems in the autonomic nervous system? And what do they do?
Sympathetic
- increases activity to prepare body for physical exertion, stressful anticipation or emergencies (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic nervous systems
- normalises or reverses the effect of the sympathetic system
- acts to conserve energy and maintain resting bodily functions
What is the endocrine system? And what are its components?
The endocrine system is a bunch of glands scattered around the body that secrets hormones
It consists of:
- thyroid
- thymus
- adrenal glands
- gonads
What controls the endocrine system?
The pituitary gland - which is considered the master gland
however the pituitary gland is under the control of the hypothalamus
