Nervous System Flashcards
Name the types of neuroglia (6)
Astrocytes, microglial cells, ependymal cells, oligodendrocytes, satellite cells, Schwann cells
What do astrocytes do?
CNS. Send out processes, wrap around capillaries and nerve fibers and regulate chemical environment
What do microglial cells do?
Defensive cells in CNS. Motor neuron for infections
What do Ependymal cells do?
- They line cerebrospinal fluid filled cavities and ventricles of brain and spinal chord.
- production and movement of cerebral spinal fluid
What do oligodendrocytes do?
Form myelin sheath around CNS nerve fibers and send processes that wrap around nerve fibers
What do Satellite cells do?
only in PNS monitors chemical environment
What do Schwann cells do?
only in PNS form myelin
In relation to the nervous system what is a nucleus?
Cluster of nerve cell bodies within CNS
What is a ganglion?
Cluster of nerve cell bodies within PNS
What is a nerve track?
Bundle of nerve fibers within CNS
What is a nerve?
Bundle of neural fibers in PNS
What is white matter?
Bundles of myelinated nerve tracks in the CNS
What is grey matter?
CNS: dendrites, nerve cell bodies, unmyelinated nerve fibers and neuroglia cells
What does the CNS consist of?
Brain & spinal chord
What does the PNS consist of?
Nerves, ganglia, sensory receptors, neuromuscular/neuroglandular junctions
