Nervous System #2 Flashcards
Retina
Light sensitive rod and cone cells converting light stimulus into nerve impules
Cornea
Transparent layer that lets light through
Conjunctiva
Thin transparent membrane lining cornea and eyelids
Pupil
Opening in iris letting light into the eyes
Ciliary muscles
Muscles that contract to make the lens thinner
Suspensory ligaments
Fine fibers supporting the lens
Lens
Biconvex structure made of clear cells that bens light to make a clear image on the retina
Aqueous humor
Watery liquid with oxygen and nutrients to nourish the cornea and lens
Vitreous humor
Jelly-like liquid supporting the eye
Iris
Consists of radial and ring muscles. Changes pupil size to control amount of light entering the eye
Sclera
Tough, thick, protective layer of the eye made of opaque white connective tissue
Optic nerve
Carries nerve impulses to the cerebral cortex
Blind spot
Point where the optic nerve leaves the eye; no light sensitive cells
Yellow spot
Most light sensitive spot on retina, filled with colour sensitive cone cells
