Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Central NS?
A
- Spinal cord - a column of nerves between the brain and peripheral nervous system
- Brain stem - Connects the brain to the spinal cord
- Brain - divided into three major parts; hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain

Q
What is the Peripheral NS?
A
- The automatic NS - regulates involuntary bodily processes, including heart rate, respiration, digestion and pupil contractio, operates automatically without conscious direction
- Sympathetic NS - prepares the body for action and stress (figtht or flight)
- Parasympathetic NS - calms the body and helps the body to conserve energy
- The Somatic NS - carried sensory information from sensory organs to the CNS and relays motor comands to muscles, controls voluntary movements

Q
What is the neural pathway?
A
- Stimulus
- Receptor
- Afferent or sensory neuron
- Integration center
- Efferent or motor neuron
