Nervous system Flashcards
Primary functions of the nervous system
Receiving and processing sensory information and creating appropriate responses to be relayed to muscle and glands
- Controls and integrates sensory, motor, and autonomic functions
- Maintains internal homeostasis
- Enables connection and response to external environment
- Coordinates emotion, memory, cognition, and learning
Cerebrum
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, and it controls many of the brain’s functions. It’s located at the front of the brain and is made up of gray matter and white matter.
Diencephalon
he diencephalon is involved in many crucial bodily functions including coordinating with the endocrine system to release hormones, relaying sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, and regulating circadian rhythms
Brainstem
The brain stem is in the lowest part of the brain. It is made up of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. It controls many vital functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, and the nerves and muscles used in seeing, hearing, walking, talking, and eating
Cerebellum
The cerebellum is a vital component in the human brain as it plays a role in motor movement regulation and balance control. The cerebellum coordinates gait and maintains posture, controls muscle tone and voluntary muscle activity but is unable to initiate muscle contraction.
