Nervous System Flashcards
Three functions of nervous system
Sensory input, integration, and motor output
Sensory input
Monitors and detects changes/stimuli occurring inside and outside the body.
Integration
Interprets info/sensory input and decides whether action is needed and what action is needed
Motor output
Carries out response to stimuli by activating effectors which activates muscles or glands
Two major divisions of nervous system
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System
CNS
Brain and spinal cord. In charge of Integration
PNS
Nerves extending from CNS. Includes 31 spinal nerves and 12 cranial nerves. Serves as communication lines
2 Functional classifications of PNS
Sensory/afferent division and motor/efferent division
Sensory/afferent division
Information being carried towards CNS from somatic sensory fibers and visceral sensory fibers
Motor/efferent division
Info being carried from CNS. Can either be somatic or autonomic.
Somatic subdivision
Voluntary control of skeletal muscles
Autonomic subdivision
Involuntary control of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands
Sympathetic
Fight or flight. Epinephrine. Response to unusual stimulus. E division
Parasympathetic
Housekeeping. Conserves energy and maintains daily necessary body functions. D division
