nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
what is the nervous system
A
- consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
- communicates using electrical signals
2
Q
what is the central nervous system (cns)
A
- consists of the brain and spinal cord
- origin of complex commands and decisions
3
Q
what is the somatic nervous system
A
- transmits information from receptor cells to the CNS
- receives information form the CNS that directs muscles to act
4
Q
what is the autonomic nervous system
A
- transmits messages to and from internal bodily organs
- system operates involuntarily
- has the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
5
Q
function of the nervous system
A
- collect process and respond to information in the environment
- coordinates the working of different organs and cells in the body
6
Q
what is the brain
A
- centre of all conscious awareness
cereal cortex (outer layer) is 3 mm thick, covers the brain and is only found in mammals - divided into two hemispheres
7
Q
spinal cord
A
- an extension of the brain
- passes messages to and from the brain
- connects nerves to the pns
- responsible for reflex actions
8
Q
what is the peripheral nervous system (pns)
A
- transmits messages via neurons to and from the central nervous systems
- divided in to the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system
9
Q
what is the autonomic nervous system
A
- governs vital functions like breathing heart rate and digestion
10
Q
what is the somatic nervous system
A
governs muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
