Nervous System Flashcards
Outline what is meant by the nervous system
Specialised network of cells in human body & our primary internal communication system
Based on electrical & chemical signals whereas endocrine system based on hormones
Divided into 2 subsystems: Central Nervous System//Peripheral Nervous System
Outline the main functions of the nervous system
Collect, process & respond to info in environment
Co-ordinate working of different organs & cells in body
Outline the central nervous system
Made up of brain & spinal chord
Brain = centre of all conscious awareness
Brain’s outer layer - cerebral cortex - only 3mm thick & covers brain & only found in mammals
Brain highly developed in humans & distinguishes our higher mental functions from other animals
Only few living creatures don’t have brain - jellyfish & sea squirts
Spinal chord = extension of brain
Passes messages to & from brain & connects nerves to PNS
Also responsible for reflex actions such as pulling your hand away from hot plate
Outline the Peripheral Nervous System
Transmits messages, via millions of neurons to & from CNS
Further subdivided into:
Autonomous nervous system - governs vital functions in body like breathing, HR, digestion, sexual arousal & stress responses
Somatic nervous system - governs muscle movement & receives info from sensory receptors
