Nervous System Flashcards
Control Nervous System
Brain and spinal cord. It processes information
Pheripheral Nervous system
All other nerve pathways in the body. Carries info between Organs to CNS
Somatic nerves
Controls muscles skin and bones
Sensory somatic nerves
Relay info about environment to the CNS
Motor somatic nerves
Initiatiates an appropriate response to it
Autonomic nervous system
Has special motor nerves that control the internal organs of the body and it consists of sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system
Two cells in the nervous system
Glial and neurons
Glial cells/neurological cells
Nonconducting cells that are important for structure support and metabolism of the nerve cells
Neurons
Nerve cell that conducts nerve impulses. They contain dendrites, cell bodies and axons
Dendrites
Carries impulses towards the cell bodies
Axon
Carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
Myelin Sheath
White coat of fatty protien over the axon
Schwann cells
Special type of glial cells that make the myelin sheath
Nodes of ranvier
Gaps between the sections of the myelin sheath on the axon
Neurilemma
Delicate membrane that surrounds the axon on some nerve cells
White/grey matter
Nerves in brain that are myelinated are white matter other nerves in brain and spinal cord are called grey matter
Sensory neurons
Carry impulses to the CNS
Sensory receptors
Modified dentrides that are activated by environmental stimulus
Ganglia
Clusters of cell bodies of sensory neurons
Interneurons
Connects with sensory motor and other internernurouns to integrate sensory input with motor input
Effectors
Cell or organ that responds to the stimulus
Motor neurons
Carry pulses from CNS fo an effector
Motor neurons
Carry pulses from CNS fo an effector
