nervous system Flashcards
central nervous system (CNS)
part of the nervous system found in the center of body; two main parts are brain and spinal cord
sensory neurons
nerve cells that respond to external stimuli and send messages about the environment to brain and spinal cord
motor neurons
nerve cells that send out signals from brain/spinal cord to body’s muscles, enabling the brain to control bodily movement
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
part fo the nervous system found in the periphery/outside of body, consists of somatic and autonomic nervous system
somatic nervous system
the part of peripheral nervous system that controls voluntary movements of muscles
autonomic nervous system
the part of peripheral system that control bodily function that are generally not under own control (breathing, heart beating)
sympathetic
division of autonomic nervous system, arouses the body for “fight or flight” response
parasympathetic
division of autonomic nervous system that maintains normal function of body, calms and conserves energy
