Nervous System Flashcards
Sympathetic nerves
Short pre-ganglionic fibre, long post ganglionic fibre
Preganglionic neurotransmitter: Ach
Postganglionic neurotransmitter: noradrenaline
Cardiac accelerator nerves
Release noradrenaline, binds to B1 receptors = positive chronotropic and ionotropic effect
(Sympathetic) (adrenaline also acts on B1Rs)
Parasympathetic influence on heart
Vagus nerves, release Ach, act on muscarinic receptors Reduces HR (-ve chronotropic)
Mean arterial pressure
MAP = D + 1/3 (S-D)
Carotid sinus nerve
Glossopharyngeal
Aortic baroreceptor nerve
Aortic nerve -> vagus
Increase in MAP
Stretches carotid sinus- stimulates baroreceptors = increased frequency of action potentials
Stimulates cardio inhibitory centre, inhibits cardioacceleratory centre
Arterial chemoreceptor nerves
Carotid sinus- glossopharyngeal nerves
Increase in carotid and aortic chemoreceptor discharge
Fall in PO2 (hypoxaemia)
Circulating adrenaline acts on
A1 receptors and B2 receptors (vasodilatation)
