Nervous System Flashcards
Main types of nervous system
CNS and PNS
PNS divisions and functions
Afferent: sensory info to brain
Efferent: Motor info to body
Efferent division and functions
Somatic: skeletal muscle
Autonomic: cardiac/smooth muscle
Autonomic divisions and function
Sympathetic: fight/flight
Parasympathetic: rest/digest
Neurons
Specialised nerve cell
Sensory neuron: axons convey to CNS
Motor neuron: axons convey away CNS
Meninges
Dura mater: superficial, tough
Arachnoid mater: like a spiders web, subarachnoid space has CSF between Pia mater
Pia mater: deep. Thin CT.
Plexuses
Cervical- c1-c5… 2 major peripheral nerves
Brachial-c5-t1… 5 major peripheral nerves
Lumbar-L1-L4… 4 major peripheral nerves
Sacral- L4-S4… 2 major peripheral nerves
Dervish plexus
C3-C5: phrenic nerve
C1-C5: cervical nerves
Brachial plexus
C5-6: axillary C5-T1: radial C5-7: musculocutaneous C6-T1: median C8-T1: ulnar
Lumbar plexus
T12-L1:iliohypogastric
L1:ilioinguinal
L2-4: femoral
L2-4:obturator
Sacral plexus
L4-S2: Gluteal (sup/Inf)
L4-S3: Sciatic (Tibial/Peroneal)
Sciatic nerve
Splits into tibial and common peroneal nerve above knee
Common peroneal nerve
Splits below knee into superficial and deep peroneal nerve
