nervous system Flashcards
what is the CNS
the central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord
what is the PNS
the peripheral nervous system is all the nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord and extend to other parts of the body including muscles and organs
explain what is Somatic?
the somatic nervous system collects information using the sensory organs and controls body movement. (you must think about it before it happens)
explain what is autonomic?
the autonomic nervous system is activities in the body that occur without thought. (something like blinking)
what is sympathetic?
sympathetic speeds up the functions of the body and makes it work more efficiently. “flight or fight response”
what is parasympathetic?
parasympathetic slows down the functions of the body when resting. “rest or digest response”
difference between autonomic, somatic and central and an example of each
autonomic- something that happens automatically (digestion)
somatic- something you think about before doing (walking)
central- controls most of the body functions and mind
(speech)
3 things that are autonomic
heartbeat, digestion, saliva, goosebumps, sweating, vomiting, pupil size, breathing, control of glands, urination and shivering.
3 things that are somatic
smelling, touch, taste, walking, chewing, vision, hearing, breathing, muscle contraction and smiling
3 things that are central
balance, memory, speech, blood flow to the muscles, circulation, swallowing, thirst, sleep and breathing
the basic structure of a neuron?
starts with a dendrite as the branches which leads into the soma a nucleus inside the soma which leads to the myelin sheath and inside that a Schwann cell and in between each myelin sheath the node of Ranvier and last the axon terminal
how electrical signals move through a neuron and how they’re transmitted to the next
an axon carries an electrical impulse from the cell body to the structures that are the opposite end of the axon terminals which can then pass the impulse to another neuron.
