Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System?
A system that controls all of the activities of the body
What makes up the nervous system?
The nervous system is made up of the brain, the spinal cord, the nerves and the senses.
Why is the nervous system important?
The nervous system allows you to react to stimulus, the reactions are automatic.
What makes up the central nervous system and what does it control?
Made up of the brain and spinal cord and controls everything in the body.
What does the spinal cord do in the central nervous system?
sends messages to the brain and is a part of the nervous system that connects the brain to the rest of the nervous system.
What does the brain do in the central nervous system?
controls everything in the body made up of more than 10 billion nerves. It is divided into 3 parts and is protected by the skull.
What are the three parts of the brain
- The Cerebrum
- The Cerebellum
- The Brain Stem
What is the cerebrum and what does it control
Largest part of the brain. Controls: • Thinking • Memory • Speaking • Movement and identifies the information gathered by sense organs
What is the cerebellum and what does it control?
Located below and back of Cerebrum.
controls:
• Balance
• Posture
What is the brain stem and what does it control?
Connects the brain to the spinal cord. controls: • Heartbeat • Breathing • Blood Pressure
What the peripheral nervous system?
Carries messages between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. The senses carry messages about the outside environment to the central nervous system.
What is the peripheral nervous system made up of?
Made up of nerves and the sense organs such as ear, eye, tongue, skin and nerves.
What 2 parts make up the peripheral nervous system
Sensory divisions and Motor Divisions
What does sensory division do in the peripheral nervous system?
- conducts impulses from receptors to central nervous system
- informs the central nervous system of the state of the body, interior and exterior
- sensory nerve fibres can be somatic (from skin, skeletal muscles or joints) or visceral (from organs within the ventral body cavity
What does motor division do in the peripheral nervous system?
Conducts impulses from the central nervous system to effectors (muscles/ glands)
