Nervous Sys Vocab Flashcards
CNS
Part of the Nervous System that relays messages, processes information; and analyzes information.
Spinal Cord
Controls reflexes; carries signals from brain to the rest of the body.
PNS
Part of the Nervous System that consists of all neurons in the rest of the body that are not included in the brain or spinal cord.
Sensory receptors
Sensory organs that receive external stimulation & transmit.
stimulus
Anything that excites or activates & causes an impulse.
impulse
The message that a neuron carries.
sensation
A feeling resulting from the brain’s interpretation of sensory information.
reflex
Involuntary reaction to an external stimulus.
brain
The organ responsible for coordinating all body activity.
response
What your body does in reaction to a stimulus.
Dopamine
A chemical in the brain that regulates movement, emotion, punishment, motivation, sleep, rewards, and working memory.
Endocrine System
The collection of glands that create and send hormones into the circulatory system so that they can be carried towards organs
Endocrine Gland
Produces and releases chemicals directly to the bloodstream so it can be carried throughout the body.
Epinephrine
Also known as adrenaline; A hormone that is created in response to physical or mental stress (such as fear). Causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
Hormone
The chemical product of an Endocrine gland. They turn on, turn off, speed up, or slow down the activities of organs and tissues.
neuron
A specific type of cell that transmits impulses.
Homeostasis
The body?s ability to maintain stable internal conditions inside the body.
