Nervous And Endocrine Systems Flashcards
Central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
The sensory and motor neurons that connect the CNS to the rest of the body
Nerves
Bundled axons that form neural cables connecting the CNS to muscles, glands, and sense organs
Sensory neurons
Neurons that carry incoming information from the sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord
Motor neurons
Neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain and CNS to the muscles and glands
Interneurons
Neurons within the CNS that communicate internally and intervene between the sensory inputs and motor outputs
Somatic NS
Division of the peripheral NS that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
Autonomic NS
Part of the peripheral NS that controls the glands and muscles of internal organs
Ex: the heart
It’s 2 divisions = sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
Sympathetic NS
Division of the autonomic nervous system that arouses the body in stressful situations
Parasympathetic NS
Division of autonomic nervous system that calms the body conserving its energy
Neural networks
Brains neurons that cluster into work groups
Reflex
Simple automatic response to a sensory stimulus
Endocrine system
Body’s slow chemical communication system
Hormones
Chemical messengers that are manufactured by the endocrine glands travel through the bloodstream and affect other tissue
Adrenal glands
Pair of endocrine glands that sit above the kidneys and secrete hormones
Arises body in times of stress
