Nervous and Endocrine System Prep Flashcards
What is the role of the nervous system?
To enable humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour.
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes
What is a hormone?
A chemical substance produced by a gland and carried in the bloodstream, which alters the activity of specific target organs
Which hormone causes maturation of an egg in the ovary?
FSH
Which hormones are involved in maintaining the uterus lining?
Oestrogen and progesterone
What is testosterone?
The main male reproductive hormone produced by the testes that stimulates sperm production
What are the two different types of co-ordination in humans?
Nervous and endocrine.
What is a reflex action?
A rapid, automatic response to a stimulus
What is a stimulus?
A detectable change in the environment
What is the role of the receptor in a reflex action?
Detects a stimulus
What is the role of the sensory neurone in a reflex action?
Carries impulses to the central nervous system
What is the role of the motor neurone in a reflex action?
Carries impulses away from the central nervous system
What is the role of the effector in a reflex action?
Brings about the response
What is the effect of a muscle in a reflex action?
Contracts
What is the effect of a gland in a reflex action?
Secretes a chemical
