nervous Flashcards
What is a neuron?
A cell that transports electrical impulses from a stimulus to the brain and back to the body.
What are the types of neurons?
Sensory neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons
What are sensory neurons?
A neuron that detects stimuli, and creates an electrical impulse which is sent to the central nervous system.
What are interneurons?
Interneurons continue signals through the central nervous system.
What are motor neurons?
Motor neurons transfer impulses from the central nervous system to the muscles in the peripheral nervous system, and make them move.
What are the types of receptors?
Thermo, mechano chemo, photo, pain
What is a photo receptor?
A photoreceptor detects light, and allows us to see.
What is a mechanoreceptor?
Detects touch, pressure, and vibration. This allows us to feel and hear.
What is a pain receptor
Detects damage to cells.
What is a thermoreceptor?
Detects temperature.
What is the reflex arc?
A pathway in the nervous system, that results in rapid responses that require no conscious thought. This happens to protect the body from harm.
What is the reflex arc?
A pathway in the nervous system, that results in rapid responses that require no conscious thought. This happens to protect the body from harm.
What is the central nervous system?
The central nervous system is the brain and the spinal chord.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system connects the CNS to the rest of the body.
