Olfactory Nerve
- Sensory
- Smell
CN II (2):
Optic Nerve
- Sensory
- Vision
- Innervates components in the CNS
CN III (3):
Oculomotor Nerve
- Motor
- Eyeball/ Eyelid movement
CN IV (4):
Trochlear Nerve
- Motor
- Innervates a single muscle – the superior oblique–a muscle of oculomotion.
CN V (5):
Trigmental Nerve
-Both (S and M)
Sensory: Somatic sensations of touch, pain, temperature and joint position, vibration of the face, mouth, anterior 2/3’rds of the tongue, casual sinuses and meninges
Motor: Muscles of mastication
CN VI (6):
Abducens Nerve
-Motor
-Controls only one muscle in the eye–the lateral rectus muscle of the eye
(allows you to move your eyes to the sides)

Facial Nerve
- Both (S and M)
- Controls muscles of facial expression
- Lacrimation and salvation (via parasympathetic stimulation)
- Taste from the anterior 2/3’s of the tongue (visceral sensation)

- Hearing and balance

Glossopharyngeal Nerve
- Both (S and M)
- Somatic sensation for the middle ear, pharynx, posterior 1/3 of the tongue, taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue, sensation from chemoreceptors and baroreceptors of the carotid body (visceral sensation) and salivation from the parotids (sympathetic)

Vagus Nerve
- Both (S and M)
- Motor to pharynx (swallowing) and to larynx (voice)
- Somatic sensation from the pharynx and meninges
- Taste from the epiglottis and pharynx, sensation from chemoreceptors and baroreceptors of the aortic arch (visceral sensation)

- Motor
- Innervate movement of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
CN XII (12):
Hypoglossal Nerve
- Motor
- Innervates the tongue
