Nerves And Hormones Flashcards
When your eyes are exposed to a bright light your pupils automatically contract to protect the retina. What type of response is this?
A reflex action
What is the gap between two neurones called?
A synapse
There are three types of neurone.
a) Which is responsible for sending impulses from the receptors to the central nervous system?
b) Where do motor neurones carry electrical impulses to?
a) Sensory neurone
b) Glands and muscles (for the effector)
Why is it important to keep your body temperature constant at 37*C?
Enzymes work best at 37*C
Where are FSH and LH produced in the body?
Pituitary gland
Which hormone causes the release of an egg from the ovaries?
LH
What are the three main external factors that effect plant growth?
Light, gravity and moisture.
What is the name of the hormone in plants that regulates growth?
Auxin
What is a plant’s response to light called?
Phototropism
Geotropism is a term used to describe a plant’s response to what?
Gravity
Why would a gardener use plant growth hormones?
As a weed killer or rooting powder.
What is a receptor?
Cells found in sense organs, e.g. Eyes, ears, nose
What is a neurone?
A specialised cell that transmits electrical messages or nerve impulses.
What is an effector?
Part of the body (e.g. a muscle or a gland) that produces a response to a stimuli.
What is a gland?
An organ in an animal’s body that secretes substances, e.g. hormones.
What is a stimuli?
Change in an environment
What is a synapse?
The gap between two neurones.
What is a reflex action?
An involuntary action, e.g. automatically and very quickly removing your hand from something hot.
What is a hormone?
A regulatory substance that stimulates cells or tissues into action; produced by a gland.
What is the menstrual cycle?
The monthly cycle of hormonal changes in a women.
What is the pituitary gland?
A small gland at the base of the brain that produces hormones.
What is FSH?
A hormone that stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen.
What is oestrogen?
A hormone secreted by the ovaries that inhibits the production of FSH and causes the production of LH
What is a side effect?
Condition causes by taking medication, e.g. headache, nausea.
