Nerve Trauma and Tumors Flashcards
What is a traumatic neuroma?
Regenerating axons growing haphazardly into scar tissue; Swelling is painful;
What is a Morton Neuroma? Cause?
Painful, sausage-shaped swelling of plantar interdigital nerve betwixt second and third or third and fourth metatarsal bones; Probably due to compression
What are the two common nerve sheath tumors?
Schwannoma and Neurofibroma
A patient presents with a long history of progressive hearing loss in his left ear. What type of benign neoplasm is likely causing these Syx?
Vestibular Schwannoma
A schwannoma is shown below. What are the two types of morphology shown?
Top - Antoni A pattern - compact
Bottom - Antoni B pattern - Loose and vacuolated
What are the neoplastic cells in neurofibromas?
Schwann cells
What disease are neurofibromas associate with?
Neurofibromatosis Type 1
Are most neurofibromas occur in the context of NF1?
Nope!
Describe the integration between a neurofibroma and a nerve and compare it to a schwannoma
Nerve fibers course througha neurofibroma whereas in a schwannoma, nerve fibers are pushed to the side
What is the malignant tumor associated with peripheral nerves?
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST)
