Nerve Structure and Function Flashcards
Cell Body
(SOMA) Contains nucleus, produces proteins which are responsible for building new dendrites, which enables neurons to make other connections with other neurons. Also responsible for making neurotransmitters. Connects axon and dendrites.
Axon
Conducts electrical impulses AWAY from the neurons cell body. Sheathed by myelin to assist with the conduction of signals by OLIGODENDROCYTES in the CNS or SCWANN CELLS in the PNS.
Dendrites
Projections of a neuron that RECIEVES signals from other neurons. Signals passed via chemical signals & electric impulses - electrochemical signals.
Axon Terminals
The part of the nerve cell that makes synaptic connections with another nerve cell or with an effector cell (muscle or gland cell). Specialised to release the neurotransmitters of the presynaptic cell.
