Nerve lesions Flashcards
Lesion of Olfactory CN1
Loss of smell (anosmia)
Lesion of Optic CN2
Different visual field losses depending on the location of the lesion
Lesion of Oculomotor CN3
Eye moves down and out due to unopposed action of the superior oblique and lateral rectus muscles
Ptosis (drooping eyelid)
Mydriasis (dilated pupil)
Lesion of Trochlear CN4
Diplopia and eye moves down and in
Lesion of Trigeminal CN5
Decreased facial sensation and jaw weakness
Lesion of Abducens CN6
Eye deviates medially
Lesion of Facial CN7 UMN
Asymmetry of lower face with forehead sparing
Lesion of Facial CN7 LMN
Asymmetry of upper and lower face
Loss of taste
Hyperacusis
Eye irritation due to decreased lacrimation
Lesion of Vestiulocochlear CN8
Deafness and vertigo
Lesion of Glossopharyngeal CN9
Decreased gag reflex, uvular deviation away from lesion
Lesion of Vagus CN10
Dysphagia
Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsies
Pseudobulbar palsies
Lesion of Accessory CN11
Patient cannot shrug and displays weak head movement
Lesion of Hypoglossal CN12
Tongue deviates towards the side of weakness during protrusion
Function of olfactory CN1
Smell
Sensory
Function of optic CN2
Sight
Sensory
Function of oculomotor CN3
Motor
Innervates the superior, medial and inferior rectus muscles
Innervates Levator palpebrae superioris, Inferior Oblique, Sphincter Pupillae
Function of trochlear CN4
Innervates the Superior Oblique muscle
Motor
Function of trigeminal CN5
Sensation of the face and innervates the muscles of mastication
Test corneal reflex
Motor and sensory in V3, others are sensory
Function of abducens CN6
Innervates the lateral rectus muscle
Function of facial CN7
Motor and sensory Innervates: Muscles of facial expression Stapedius Posterior belly of the digastric muscle Stylohyoid Taste anterior 2/3 tongue Lacrimal gland Salivary glands (NOT parotid)
Function of Vestibulocochlear CN8
Sensory
Sense of sound
Balance
Function of Glossopharyngeal CN9
Sensory and motor Supplies taste (sensory) to posterior 1/3 tongue and innervates the parotids as well as the stylopharyngeus
Function of Vagus CN10
Sensory and motor
Innervates:
Laryngeal and Pharyngeal muscles (NOT Stylopharyngeus)
Parasympathetic supply to thoracic and abdominal viscera
Function of (spinal) Accessory CN11
Motor
Innervates Trapezius and Sternocleidomastoid muscles
Function of Hypoglossal CN12
Motor
Innervates the muscles of the tongue (except the palatoglossal - supplied by Vagus nerve)
