Nerve injuries Flashcards
What muscles does the musculocutaneous nerve supply?
Caracobrachialis
Biceps
Brachialis
What clinical features present with a damaged musculocutaneous nerve?
Sensory: numbness over the lateral forearm.
Motor: absent biceps reflex. Weak elbow flexion and weak forearm supination.
Deformity: wasting of the anterior compartment of arm.
What nerve is commonly damaged by a surgical neck of humerus fracture?
Axillary nerve
What muscles does the axillary nerve supply?
Deltoid muscle and teres minor
What clinical features are associated with a damaged axillary nerve?
Sensory: numbness over “sergeants patch” (skin over the lower part of the deltoid).
Motor: paralysis of deltoid leading to weak shoulder abduction (15 - 90 degrees). Paralysis of teres minor leads to weak external shoulder rotation.
Deformity: wasting of deltoid
What fracture can cause damage to the radial nerve?
Fracture of proximal humerus, humeral shaft or proximal radius.
What hand deformity can be seen with damage to radial nerve?
“Wrist drop” - dropping of the wrist during wrist extension.
Median nerve palsy causes wasting of the hypothenar eminence. True/false?
False, median nerve damage causes wasting of the thenar eminence of the hand.
Ulnar nerve palsy causes hypothenar eminence wasting.
Wasting of the biceps is a feature of radial nerve damage. True/false?
False, wasting of the bicep can occur due to damage of the musculocutaneous nerve.
What nerve is associated with “claw hand”?
Ulnar nerve
What nerve is associated with “foot drop”?
Common peroneal nerve
What nerve supplies the hip joints?
Obturator nerve
What is a potential cause of obturator nerve damage?
Can be damaged during surgery that involves the abdomen or pelvis.
Some symptoms of obturator nerve damage?
Numbness and paraesthesia of the thigh.
Weakness in thigh adduction
Patient can present with posture or gait problems due to lack of hip adduction.
Another name for the superficial fibular nerve?
Superficial peroneal nerve
