Nerve Cells and Behavior Flashcards
Name 2 types of glial cells:
microglia, macroglia
What types of cells fall in the macroglia category?
Oligodendorcytes, Schwann Cells, Astrocytes
How do you tell the difference between activated and inactive microglia?
Active are more branched and have stouter processes.
What is the cell that myelinates axons the the central nervous system?
oligodendrocytes
Name some of the functions of astrocytes
Form blood brain barrier, bring nutrients to neurons, maintain potassium ion concentration in the extracellular space. Take up neurotransmitters
How is information coded from one neuron to another?
In patterns of action potentials
Name the two principles of neural orgainzation:
Dynamic polarization: signals flow in only one direction.
Connectional specificity: Neurons do not connect to each other randomly
